Twins are needed to join landmark research into how our genes affect the rhythm of the heartbeat.

If you’re a twin aged between 18-35, don’t smoke and are not on regular medications, you can make a difference. Identical and non-identical twins living in Sydney, same sex and opposite sex twins, all can join in.

This new study, led by the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Unit in conjunction with St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney, is investigating the relationship between genes and our heart rhythm.

The rhythm of the heartbeat is controlled by electrical signals. These signals can be recorded as a heart tracing or on an ‘ECG’. This study aims to assess the relationship between the 24-hour ECG monitor (Holter) and differences in the DNA between different people.

With your help, researchers will look at how much of our heart’s electrical activity is inherited and how much is determined by the environment.

Ultimately, this may enable us to make more accurate predictions about who is most at risk for developing heart rhythm problems, which are a major risk factor for stroke and heart failure.

Tests will be carried out at St Vincent’s Clinic, Victoria Rd, Darlinghurst Sydney. To thank you for your time and effort, you will be reimbursed with a $40 Westfield gift card.
